When R&B superstar John Legend sat down with Oprah Winfrey for
an "Oprah's Next Chapter" chat, the talk naturally turned to
allegations that he was recently caught cheating on his supermodel
fiance, Chrissy Teigen. But the Grammy-winning crooner was careful on how he answered the talk show queen's burning questions.
Last month, the New York Post reported
that Legend was caught kissing an unidentified blonde at Manhattan
hotspot Acme, with a source saying the steamy makeout session lasted
several minutes and the mystery woman later boasted to her pals about
it.
When Oprah
asked Legend about the Post story, he said, "We've had a few run-ins
with the tabloids, and they've been very creative in the past." He
didn't speak directly about the Post story, but went on to detail
another story that accused him of going to a hotel with a mystery woman
-- when the woman was, in fact, Chrissy. He also recounted a false
tabloid story that reported that he had been in a drunken brawl. "Anyone
who knows anything about me knows I would never get into a drunken
brawl anywhere," he said.
But Teigen,
who was also on hand for the interview, gave her two cents on the Post
story: "I was really upset with it," she said. "But I never for one
second thought John had done anything. I knew who he was with that
night. I didn't question it at all. But it wasn't fun to have people
questioning us."
Legend also told Oprah that while his engagement to Teigen was a long
time coming (they've been together for seven years), he knew she was the
one for him: "I knew I loved her. I knew I could see myself living with
her and spending time with her forever. I knew I could envision us
having kids together. And I felt like it was time to propose. She didn't
pressure me. She didn't say, you know, it's time to put a ring on it.
It just felt like - I felt like it's time for us to get married."
Teigen joked about her long wait for a proposal. "There were - after year four you got to start wondering like when is this gonna happen? And he's such a romantic all the time. I think you just lose hope … there were a few false alarms."
While the Sports Illustrated model said she is grateful to have found love with her crooning fiance, she added that it gets tiring of being told how "lucky" she is to have landed John.
"No one wants to feel like they won the lottery by being with someone that they're with," Legend said. "We're in a relationship and I'm lucky to have her, too."
Oprah also got the scoop on Legend's odd couple friendship with Kanye West.
"You know, he's not afraid to tell the truth," Legend said of his
mentor. "He's bold. You know, obviously we have very different
personalities … Honestly, a lot of who he is in public is who he is in
private, but I think people don't always see the generous side of him;
they don't always see the guy who's been working with me and
contributing to my work for over 10 years. They don't necessarily see
all of that in public, and I see that."
